About the Unit:
There are three options to use as the anchor text for this text set, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, or 1984. Each novel depicts a totalitarian society and a character who struggles to find their way out of the darkness. Students will choose a book and analyze the dystopian themes in the novel while thinking critically about their implications in society. As they dive in, they will seek to answer the essential questions for the unit: Who should have the ability to control distribution of information in a society and what are the risks of censoring information? Where is the line between technology being a blessing and it becoming a curse? Why is individualism important in society? As students explore this unit, we hope they will begin to see beyond the dark and bleak setting in dystopian literature to find the messages (via the warnings) of hope, of opportunity, of finding yourself amidst the obstacles of life.
