Proceed With Caution - 1984 Printed Workbook
About the Unit:
The novel 1984 depicts a totalitarian society and a character who struggles to find their way out of the darkness. Students will choose a book and analyze the dystopian themes in the novel while thinking critically about their implications in society. As they dive in, they will seek to answer the essential questions for the unit: Who should have the ability to control distribution of information in a society and what are the risks of censoring information? Where is the line between technology being a blessing and it becoming a curse? Why is individualism important in society? As students explore this unit, we hope they will begin to see beyond the dark and bleak setting in dystopian literature to find the messages (via the warnings) of hope, of opportunity, of finding yourself amidst the obstacles of life.

IMPORTANT NOTE - All Proceed With Caution units include the same core components and supplemental resources. The distinguishing factor is the journal prompts, which have been tailored to the anchor text. Therefore, we do NOT recommend buying more than one of the Proceed With Caution units for the same student. For students interested in reading more than one of the dystopian novels, we recommend purchasing one of the Proceed With Caution units and then purchasing the digital download of the journal prompts for the additional novel(s) desired.
Example: If a student wants to read 1984 and Fahrenheit 451, we recommend purchasing the complete text set for Fahrenheit 451 and then purchasing the digital download for the journals for 1984.
