This unit is a text set anchored in Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. While the anchor text was first published in 1997, the storyline follows Chris McCandless who was strongly influenced by traditional works, especially those from the transcendentalist movement. Students will explore some of these more complex texts while seeking to understand the essential question: What does it mean to be human, and how does perseverance help to shape our identity? In our anchor text, Chris’s version of “wilderness” is the literal wild, where he intentionally seeks discomfort in order to find meaning in his life. Our hope is that as students begin to define their own wilderness, they will develop tools to navigate their own discomfort and find meaning.
